Father Michael Hoffman
Father Michael began his ministry as the Rector of Christ Church in December of 2016, after serving as rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in McKinney, TX. Before that he served as the vicar of St. Peter and St. Paul in Mission, TX, an assistant rector at St. Andrew’s, Seguin, TX, and a youth minister at St. Luke’s, Birmingham, AL. He is a two-time graduate (BA and MDiv) from Sewanee, the University of the South, and is finishing a doctorate from Sewanee to complete the trifecta. Michael and his wife Amy have a 4th grader, Garrett, and a 4 year-old, Zoe. Michael is passionate about proclaiming the Good News of God in Christ and expanding the Kingdom of God inside and outside of the church walls.
Rev'd Walt Kindergan
Associate Rector for Pastoral Care
Walt comes to us after serving at Holy Cross and St. Christopher’s Episcopal Churches here in Pensacola. Walt grew up a Roman Catholic in West Virginia and spent a thirty-year career in the U.S. Navy, serving as a meteorologist and in mapping and charting operations. He became an Episcopalian while stationed in Louisiana in the early 1980s. After his Naval service, Walt was a school teacher for a couple of years and then worked in federal service as a management assistant.
Walt met Becky here at Christ Church when he was stationed here and she worked in federal service at NAS Pensacola. They have been married 28 years and have four grown sons.
About thirteen years ago, Walt began discernment for a call to ordained ministry He attended The General Theological Seminary in New York and was ordained a priest in July of 2014.
Walt holds Bachelor’s degrees from Chaminade University of Honolulu and Florida State University and Master’s degrees from Florida State (History) and The General Theological Seminary (Divinity).
Walt says the driving forces of his ministry are “spirituality, contemplative practices, and seeking to find the active presence of God’s spirit in each and every person I meet.” He loves all aspects of parish ministry and is excited for this opportunity to serve here at Christ Church.
MUSIC DIRECTOR, ORGANIST
David Leahey began his musical career as a chorister at Liverpool Cathedral, England. During that time he gained a wonderful choral education, participating in services for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, HRH Princess Diana and Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major. David also toured Spain and Japan alongside Paul McCartney performing McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio. While still a teenager he became organist for a number of churches in Liverpool and its surrounding area. At age sixteen he was appointed as Organ Scholar at Liverpool Cathedral under the tutelage of the world-renowned Professor Doctor Ian Tracey, and in this capacity, he accompanied and conducted services and assisted in the training of probationer choristers.
In 1997 he followed in the footsteps of Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Herbert Howells, and was awarded the foundation scholarship at the Royal College of Music in London, England, before returning to Liverpool to study for a Bachelor of Honors degree in Music and Information Technology.
Prior to David joining Christ Church, he was the Director of Music at two high profile churches in the DC Metro area and Director of Music at Christ Church, New Bern. During his time in the USA, he has worked with George Mason University and demonstrated his excellent repertoire by performing recitals at the White House, the Blair House, and Washington's National Cathedral, among other establishments throughout the US.
As a lifelong Episcopalian, James spent the majority of his time in ministry with children, youth, and young adults in the Episcopal Church and was raised in the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast. James will develop the youth ministries with 6-12th graders and their families in addition to serving as the Lay Chaplain at the Episcopal Day School. James holds a Bachelor's Degree in Adventure Education with an emphasis in Recreation Management from Prescott College. He is also connected with Diocesan Youth Ministries, Camp Beckwith, and Province IV Youth Ministries as well as those across the Episcopal Church (ECUSA). He and his wife Emmi have two children, Grayson and Ainsley, who attend the Mother’s Day Out program at Christ Church.
